There are many styles and sizes of jewelry boxes, all of which are designed to store, organize and protect jewelry. Those that are made specifically for jewelry can be made of leather, wood, or metal. The largest type of jewelry boxes are the ones that are made of wood. They typically have several drawers and are made of mahogany or oak, although other woods such as teak or burlwood may be used. The exterior can have a matte, semi-gloss or high gloss lacquer with intricate designs or a simple and sleek finish.
The ones that are made for women can range from very small chests that can fit inside a drawer to large stand-alone ones that have legs and are bureaus in and of themselves. Most wooden jewelry boxes fall in the middle of this range and provide storage for necklaces, rings, bracelets, earrings and rings. The drawers may slide out or lift out accordion style and are usually lined with velvet. Inside there may be a mirror or swing-out necklace bars. Leather Jewelry Boxes
These jewelry boxes are often designed for men and are much simpler than comparable ones for women. They may have a single tray with compartments or two layers with a lid which is wrapped in leather – and they can be used to hold cuff links and watches.
Travel Jewelry Boxes
These jewelry boxes are often custom jewelry boxes that need to be designed to ensure jewelry will remain organized and secure during travel. There are compartments inside the box that are lined and can slide out of the case. These compartments can then be divided into a large one for necklaces and two or more smaller ones for rings, bracelets and earrings.
