FPOS – or First Person on the Scene – qualification is required in order to become an emergency first responder. FPOS training focuses on assessing the trauma victim, stabilising their condition, and transfer. This training will equip you with vital knowledge for a variety of emergency situations, and can literally mean the difference between life and death.

In addition to the training, however, there are certain qualities that you should possess if you wish to begin FPOS training. Obviously, the first on the list would be the ability to keep calm in stressful situations, and an ability to deal with unpleasant scenes. Others you should consider include:

1. Initiative
It’s important that you have the drive for initiative to set things into motion. Especially in cases in which every second that passes is dire, you’ll want to have confidence in your ability to quickly asses the situation, come up with a plan, and take a leadership role.

2. Fitness
You’ll want to be physically fit, as there may be any variety of physical activity involved. You may have to climb or lift heavy objects in order to get to the victim, or carry the victims themselves. Being fit will help you complete these actions quickly with minimal effort.

3. Communication
When dealing with a victim, your communication skills are an important tool when it comes to helping calm, stabilise, and motivate. Additionally, you’ll be able to effectively communicate the needs of the situation to other personnel.

4. Risk Assessment
Assisting the victim is your first priority. But when it comes to potential hazards and risks, it’s up to you to stay vigilant and determine what actions may create a bigger danger to the victim.

5. Selflessness and Empathy
If you determine that it is safe to approach and assist the victim, then your selflessness will have to kick in. Being FPOS means that you will have to put aside fears of your own injury or other losses in order to help the victim. Empathy will also help you to put yourself into the shoes of your victim and understand the fear and anxiety they are going through. This will help you to calm the victim, as outlined in number one.

Of course, this isn’t an exhaustive list, and you’ll learn more in a training course. If you feel you’re cut out for the job and posses the necessary qualities, then it’s time to research an FPOS intermediate course. You have the potential to wind up changing – or saving – someone’s life.
