In the early part of the 20th Century, two men (David Sharp and Alexander Hudson) pooled their resources to purchase a machine shop in Green Bay. The shop had been in business for 40 years, providing repair services to steamboats and also produced sawmill parts.

When they first opened their shop they included machinery which could produce folded napkins at a very high rate. They also developed and created paper mill equipment and machines to wind toilet paper. At first, they were not producing Hudson Sharp machine parts, but this would change in the future.

Within 15 years of opening for business, the company started making printing presses and provided innovative designs. For example, aniline printing methods were being used at the time. They utilized rubber plates with aniline type ink. Shortly after the Second World War, Hudson Sharp was purchase by SJ Campbell. SJ Campbell developed the world’s first form, fill and sealing machine capable of operating in horizontal mode. It was innovative for its day and allowed for mass production of baked goods, wrapped candy and many other products.

In the mid 1950s FMC Corporation decided to include Hudson Sharp into their Packaging Machinery department. Within a few years, FMC came up with the Flyswatter machine. It was a special wicketer bagging machine which could both cut and stack bags. The circular motion of its action resembled a person using a flyswatter.

The company began to grow and was soon offering equipment and Hudson Sharp machine parts in different parts of the planet. Over the years, exciting innovations have taken place and by the 1970s servo technology entered the picture. Production methods became much faster and included plastic trash bags.

The 80s saw the emergence of the plastic grocery store bag, as it would eventually replace paper bags. At the start of the 21st Century, bottom seal methods came into being. Plus, the company became known as Hudson Sharp again. Today, they are still producing innovative designs and products for the bag making industry.
