Backup has become almost synonymous with data protection. It is not the only way data can be protected against loss, damage, manipulation or theft, but it is an important one. In this respect, it often becomes one of the biggest priorities of the IT department. On paper, it seems like a simple exercise. Any It manager worth their salt, however, knows that every backup process and document storage in Houston, Texas must follow set procedure, otherwise it will risk running into problems. There are three major systems of types of backup popular today;
Full backup
This is the most basic and simplest to execute. Full back up is when all the data is copied to another storage medium, which can be a tape, DVD or CD. The biggest advantage here is that every possible bit of information will be available, so there is no risk of loss. This means there is not a lot of time spent in the restoration of data. A full backup, however, takes much longer than the other types. Most of the time, they are only run periodically. Data centers with small amounts of data might do this daily though.
Incremental backup
This is the backup system where only the data that has changed since the last backup process is stored. This system uses the modified time stamp on files, comparing them to the times on the last backup. If there have been no modifications on the actual files since the last backup, then these files are not changed. It is not too extensive, and can run as often as desired. Since the incremental backup only copies a small amount of data, they run much faster.
Differential backup
The differential backup is a hybrid of the full and incremental backup systems. On the first time it is run, it will copy all the data that changed from the previous backup. Each time it is run afterwards, it continues to copy all the data changed since the previous full backup. It will typically store more data than an incremental backup, but less than the full backup. They therefore require more time and space than the incremental backup systems, but less space than the full backup.
