Halloween is a popular holiday. And no one can deny that it’s a lot of fun, but what’s not fun is the number of cavities you and your children could be getting once all is said and done. After you finish trick or treating in Florence this year, stick to these simple tips to avoid an uncomfortable trip to the dentist.

1. Avoid the Gooey Treats

We all like good caramel candy and even those adorable little gummy bears, but they tend to become lodged within the teeth and will create a serious breeding ground for bacteria. Also keep in mind that you should stay away from sour candies due to their acidity level, which can easily eat through tooth enamel.

2. Finding Alternatives

You can still eat candy, but if you’re going to go on a binge, then you should choose something that’s a bit lower in acid. By this, we mean pretzels, sugar-free gums, milk chocolate candies, and even dark chocolate. Did you know that dark chocolate has antioxidants that will prevent the bacteria from sticking to your teeth? Keep that in mind the next time you reach for caramel – you’ll want to opt for the dark chocolate bar.

3. Don’t Forget to Brush Halloween Night!

The best advice? Make sure you brush your teeth thoroughly after a night of pigging out on candy and sugary treats. Make sure, too, that you and your little ones are only eating in short sessions. In other words, don’t smash the entire bag in one sitting — it’s bad for you, and could lead to a trip to the dentist.
