Companies formulate industrial gear oils to prevent potentially harmful problems. Additives are blended into the base oil to prevent a variety of detrimental issues including corrosion, oxidation and rust. They may also be combined with anti-foam agents and extreme pressure additives to create an oil which will function optimally.

Choosing the Right Industrial Gear Oil

This is not a straightforward process. It requires understanding what factors impact the selection of the best oil for the situation. The top five involved in the selection process should be:

  • Cleanliness: It is important to maintain a clean gearbox. Smaller and constantly active gears increase the level of contaminants and result in more metal-on-metal contact. To ensure cleanliness, choose a lubricant that is of lower viscosity. It will filter with greater ease reducing the presence of contaminants significantly.
  • Durability: Industrial gear oils need to be able to last, withstanding whatever in-service conditions exist. They must be capable of helping to extend the service life of the gears they protect.
  • Additives: What is to be accomplished? Are the additives to reinforce or provide protection against corrosion, wear and/or extreme pressure? choose those that complement and are compatible with the goal, each other and the base oil.

Industrial Gear Oils

The goal of any industrial gear oil is to maintain a thermally stable lubricant that has longevity. It must also perform efficiently while providing the right level of protection. The oil must accomplish this while ensuring the system remains clean – carrying away the heat and diverse contaminants to accomplish this.
