Once you have been trained as a court reporter, you want to start using your new skills in order to find a job within your field.  The good news is that there is a great demand for court reporters in today’s world.  Once you graduate from an accredited program, you will likely be able to find work in a variety of cities of many different sizes in many different states.  There are a number of ways you can go about looking for jobs for court reporters including directly contacting the courts in your area.  Here are some other ideas to help you find a job once you are certified as a court reporter so you can begin your career on the right foot.

One of the best places to look for jobs for new court reporters is to simply check with the school that trained you in the field.  Some schools have access to job listings in the area and some courtrooms and even local businesses will contact the schools looking for qualified individuals.  The listings these schools have are usually updated regularly so there is a good chance that you will be able to find a job that still ahs an opening.  Sometimes, if the school has a good relationship with a court in the area, you might even have a better chance with the job application since the court knows that the schools puts good students out into the work field.

If you want to move away from the school you intended, you can contact state Human Resource departments where you want to move and see if they can advice you of opening for court reporters in the city, county, or district.  You can also get general position that are open and find out how to submit your application.  You might even be able to find a website that can direct you to the positions in the area and you can also often submit an application online.

If you know other court reporters, you can also check with them to see if they have heard of any jobs in their area.  It is always good to have a reference when you apply for a job and using an already trusted court reporter on your application will help you get your food in the door.

If you do not want to work with one courtroom alone, you might want to be one of the court reporters that works on a freelance basis. You can work with a number of different courts and businesses and you can accept or decline jobs as they come your way.  You can continue to learn as you build your reputation within the court reporting industry.
