To most people moving is not on the top of their list of fun things to do, not only is it very disruptive for one’s life, it can be very expensive as well. There are many things about moving that are really out of your control, but on the other hand there are a number of ways that you can reduce the cost.

If you are moving yourself that is one thing, but if you are using relocation companies in NYC to move the contents of your home these hints will help you cut down the costs.

Lighten up: Every home has things in it that for some reason should have been thrown out or otherwise disposed of years ago; now is the time to do it. If you have piles of old pocket novels, give them to friends or the library or sell them to used book stores, have a massive garage sale. Anything that you don’t want and can’t sell, give it to a charity. When moving; weight equals money.

The off season: The school vacation months of June and July should be avoided if at all possible as should the first and last weeks of every month. By planning your move during those times when others are not moving you can often get a price reduction.

Be flexible: if you are willing to accept the pickup and delivery times that are most suitable for the movers chances are you will get a better rate. As long as you move out on the appointed day you are OK, if the time of day is not important, in exchange you can expect a better deal.

Immediate move in: Make sure that your new home is ready for the arrival of the van. If it is not then you will be facing unnecessary in-transit storage fees. This is also true with payment; make sure you have the full payment ready on moving day.

Be ready to move: If the movers have to help with last minute packing you can expect to be charged for the service. If you are doing the packing yourself make sure it is all done before the van arrives. Ask the relocation companies in NYC in advance what they charge for furniture disassembly if this is a requirement as you may wish to do the job yourself.
