There is a range of different options that can be used by packaging companies to test the integrity of their packaging to any required standards. Some contract packaging companies, particularly those packaging for medical device manufacturers or pharmaceutical companies, will need a very high standard of leak detection.

Packing for food and beverage companies as well as similar types of applications will also require strict compliance with regulations and standards. Choosing the right type of leak detection or package testing will be critical to ensuring all packaging meets or exceeds the specific required standards or protocols.

The Basics of Flow Testing

There are different types of methods that can be used in a flow test. One of the most common is a mass flow testing method. This is a relatively simple method that involves injecting a specific pressure of air into the packaging and then monitoring any air movement outside of the package.
This requires using a regulator to control the pressure going into the packaging and also a sensor that is used on the exterior of the packaging seal to check for air escaping from the seal.

The use of this flow test methodis somewhat restricted due to the limitations of an exterior sensor to detect very small leaks. However, it is highly effective for most leak testing applications.

Testing for Occlusions or Obstructions

Another common use of the flow test is through medical devices or specific components or parts to verify there are no internal obstructions or occlusions in the design.

This test involves providing a continuous flow of air at a specific pressure to one end of the component. A sensor is placed at the other end or within the part as needed. It will record the flow rate through the system which should equal the flow rate going into the system if there are no occlusions or obstructions.
