Even if you love throwing parties and playing host, planning it all out beforehand can still be a stressful job. While you might find yourself focusing hard on perfection, it’s important to realize that you—and not your guests—are likely your biggest critic. Remember that your guests are well aware of the time and effort you’ve put in to hosting, feeding, and entertaining them for the evening!

When it comes to de-stressing and keeping the pressure off of yourself, here are some quick tips to keep in mind when you’re in the midst of pre-party prep:

Keep it Simple
If there’s a recipe that you’re great at, go for it! Even if it’s something your guests have had before, chances are, they’re not going to mind. Providing appetizers and a selection of drinks and snacks is of course suggested, but don’t go overboard. If you stress yourself out over which selection of cheeses to buy, you might lose focus on something else—like the main course. Plus, as much as it might pain you to think about it, your guests might not even notice your extra effort to choose that Gruyere over the Camembert.

Set the Mood
If you’re stressed out and frantic, your guests will sense it, and the gathering may become uneasy. Relax and have fun, and don’t overstress beforehand! Don’t leave preparation for the last minute, either. You want everything to be ready for when your guests arrive, with food only needing a quick reheat in the oven. Relaxation is key!

Get Creative
While you don’t want to over-plan your party, it doesn’t hurt to throw in a creative twist or two. Upping your dedication to one area of the party will give things a classier twist, and definitely set the tone and theme. For example, you might want to focus on making your decorations whimsical and creating a theme. Take a “garden party” for example. Look into the selection of tents for parties that are available from a reputable supplier, and set one up in your backyard. Decorate the interior with flowers and candles, and invite your guests to mingle and enjoy hors d’oeuvres within.

Overall, the key to hosting an event or party is to start in advance and plan, plan, plan! Keep ahead of your schedules and checklists, stick with the theme and menu you’ve come up with, and don’t overdo it. Trust in the fact that your guests will be delighted with whatever you’ve come up with, and remember to relax and enjoy yourself, as well.
