Are you in search of a great cigar lighter at a reasonable price? Colibri lighters may be just what you are looking for. This type of lighter has a rich history dating back many years, and when you buy one of these fine lighters, you become part of a great tradition.

In the Beginning

It started in the year 1928 in Frankfurt, Germany. This was the time Julius Lowenthal introduced Colibri Lighters to the world. He and his brother, Benno Lowenthal, started the company not long after World War I. Their very first lighter was known as the Colibri Original and it was designed to be a top of the line lighter. The word “colibri” means hummingbird, in Spanish.

Many people appreciate the innovative design of the Colibri Original lighter. Back in the 1920s, smokers had to use a bulky and sometimes difficult flint wheel when they lit their smokes from a lighter. The Colibri Original solved this problem.

The Colibri Original was called a “semi-automatic” lighter and one could use it without spinning a flint wheel for a spark. The Original was not only produced in Germany, but also England, and Switzerland. A few years later, the company came out with a fully automatic Colibri lighter known as the Monopol model. By then, company headquarters had moved to England. The Monopol was very successful and about 20 million of them were made and sold.

In 1942, a tube lighter called the Colibri Utility Lighter was introduced. By the time the Second World War was over, Colibri Lighters became Colibri Corporation and they were known as one of the finest producers of lighters and innovative lighter design.

In 1955, Colibri Lighters introduced their first gas powered model. Before this, all lighters used naphtha (a petroleum fluid similar to gasoline) and each lighter needed a flint and wick. However, the butane lighter was quite different. Their butane lighter, called the Flacco was made in France. The name Flacco is a conglomeration of the two companies Flaminaire and Colibri.

Colibri and Flaminaire got together to make the lighter. It was the perfect marriage as they combined their technology in lighters with Flaminaire’s knowledge of butane tanks. The butane lighter became popular because it did not create an odor, like one receives from matches or burning lighter fluid.

Colibri Lighters continue to be at the forefront of the lighter industry today. They create a large variety of lighters including single, double, and triple torch models. You’ll find many different shapes, sizes, and they come with very affordable prices.
