Most people have heard of paracord bracelets, wristbands and watches because it has taken the world by storm. Everyone now knows that these options can do hundreds of different things and are the perfect thing to be wearing when out in the woods or wilderness. However, most people don’t know that there are various types, up to four and that there are military and commercial options, both of which offer their benefits and drawbacks.
Types
Because most people aren’t familiar with the various types available, it is important to read about it to understand. The most popular option is the 550, or Type III version, because it can hold up to 550 pounds, doesn’t cost that much and is strong enough to handle everyday and emergency situations. However, there are three other types available that you should know about.
Type I options can hold 95 pounds and have one core strand. It is typically used for lacing and other decorating purposes though it can also be used as dummy cording in knives and compasses.
Type II versions hold up to 400 pounds and have between four and seven strands in the core. While it is similar to Type III options, it is rare and hard to find, which is why the Type III option is most popular.
Type IV versions can hold up to 750 pounds and have 11 strands in the core. While this is stronger and more durable, it also costs more, which is why it isn’t used in many commercial applications. In some cases, it can cost double the price of the 550 cord, making it less popular for commercial purposes and more popular with the armed forces.
Quality and Differences
Both commercial and armed-force options can be quality cords, as long as the commercial brands follow specifications. Military issue paracord should only be made of nylon. The inner strands should also be made from nylon yarns, and each strand should hold three nylon threads. Commercial options typically use polyester with the inner strands also being made with polyester.
Military-quality options are best for survival purposes, but if you want to use the cord for other things, the commercial or polyester choice may be suitable. To check to see if your cord is of military-grade, you will want to consider the colors, as they won’t use pink or other bright colors, tending to stick with the olive drab, black or camo versions.
