In construction sites, the major cause of death is by falls. Even if a member of your crew does not die, they may injure the spine that means that if is not corrected they will remain tied in wheelchairs all their life. That is why every person working in a construction site needs training in fall safety. The training should all the same not take a lot of time. The participants should be able to easily follow it and be active during the session.
As a contractor, you need to get the proper fall equipment for your workers. The workers should also get training on how to use the equipment correctly. Any Training in Fall Safety should have three sessions that are:
• Ladder safety- this session will train the workers on proper usage of the ladder. No worker should use a broken ladder or try to increase its height. Ladders have been the cause of many deaths due to tipping.
• Scaffolding safety- daily, there are cases reported of deaths by workers who fall off from a scaffold. You surely do not want this to happen to any of your workers and it is thus necessary to train them on the safety measures to avoid such deaths.
• Roofing work safety- this session will train the workers on how to protect themselves while on steep roofs, scaffold platforms or open-sided roofs. It will go a great length to avoid many deaths from falls.
For each of these sessions, you require an experienced person to conduct them. You may even assign one of the workers to supervise the training. The person conducting the training should encourage the workers to ask questions: the session should be interactive.
It is a requirement by the United States Department of Labour that a contractor takes the necessary steps to protect his workers. Emphasize on the proper use of fall prevention equipment. In this way, deaths caused by falls at construction sites will be reduced a great deal. After the Training in Fall Safety, make sure that your workers get certificates of participation. Remember to use the Occupational Health and Safety regulation for guidance.
