Not just to keep your car running in peak condition but to save thousands in damage down the road, timely repair and preventative maintenance is critical for vehicles of all makes and models. While sometimes it will be obvious that you need to get your car in the shop, there are pieces and parts that are unlikely to show signs of a problem until it’s too late. In particular, the following should be on the top of your list for your annual auto check-up:

Oil Change

Among the list of critical car components, motor oil plays a host of roles in your car’s engine. Not only does it cool, clean, and lubricate, but it improves gas mileage and promotes vehicle longevity – that is, if you change it regularly. To ensure the health of your car and wealth of your wallet, have your oil changed every 5,000 miles or six months, whichever comes first. In a pinch, you can even do the procedure in your own driveway.

Timing Belt Evaluation

Your timing belt is unlikely to need annual repair, but is easy enough for a mechanic to have a quick scan over while testing other parts in the engine. Wear, tear, and damage will be apparent, felt as a loss of power or fuel economy. At the very least, older cars should have their timing belt checked every 60,000 miles; newer cars can typically go 100,000.

Battery Inspection

An infamously unavoidable disaster, a dead battery has kept many a car owner stuck in the driveway or the parking lot of his local grocery store. While some causes are avoidable (leaving your lights on, not using the car for an extended period of time), other factors such as age, heat, and corrosion can also play a role. To address issues as they arise, have your battery checked at least with each oil change.

Wheel Alignment

This is one that you’ll feel at the wheel, as any misalignment will cause your car to drift or shake. Especially if you have driven over potholes or recently been in an accident, request that your tires be realigned to manufacturer’s spec. Have all four (rather than two) adjusted to ensure complete balance, and request that steering and suspension components be tested at the same time.

As much of a hassle as it may seem in the moment, preventative vehicle maintenance will save money – and maybe even your car – down the road.
