Mohair is a type of fabric that is obtained from the hair of Angora goats. The fabric is similar to silk and is mainly characterized by high luster and sheen. It is among the most durable and resilient fabrics in use today. Although the material is comparatively expensive, it is one of the most proffered upholstery fabrics in use today. The fabric can as well get damaged if abrasive cleaners are used on it. This suggests that it is also delicate and has to be handled with care while cleaning it. Owing to the high luster and sheen of the fabric, it has been nicknamed the diamond fiber. Mohair upholstery is widely used in interior home decoration projects to enhance the appeal of houses.

Mohair fabric feels and looks rich, distinctive and lustrous. These are some of the main reasons why you should consider using the material in interior decoration projects. Additionally, the material has warmth retention properties and dries well. Such qualities make mohair fabric an ideal choice for use in loveseats and chairs. To ensure that this upholstery material maintains its visual appeal and lasts for long, you should clean and maintain it regularly. Regular maintenance of mohair fabric should comprise of:

  • Vacuum cleaning with a nozzle
  • Brushing
  • Removing stains

Removing Stains on Mohair Upholstery

Due to the delicate nature of the material, it is advisable to have such stains removed by the professionals. However, you may still remove them on your own using the following procedure. Damp stains should be gotten rid of as soon as they appear on the upholstery material. To remove such stains, you should use a tissue or a cloth that has been moistened with lukewarm water. You should never use colored clothes or tissues to remove such stains, because the color may stick to the fabric. If the damp cloth or tissue is not removing the stain, you should use upholstery or carpet shampoo to enhance the removal.

Rather than applying the cleaning solution directly onto the upholstery, it is advisable to damp a clean, white cloth into the solution and use it to gently remove the stain from the fabric. After removing the stain, you should remove the residual shampoo carefully with a damp white cloth. The final rubbing on this upholstery fabric should be in the direction of the nap.

Treating Marks Resulting From Wear and Tear

If not well maintained, certain regions on the fabric, especially armrests and seats, will show signs of wear with time. Such signs include matting and tangling. To restore the fabric to its initial condition, you may apply a slightly damp cloth on the affected region overnight. After this treatment, you should allow the upholstered furniture to dry completely before using it again.

For centuries now, mohair upholstery has been used as a luxury fabric. However, the fabric is delicate and should be well taken care of to ensure that it lasts for long.
