If you are handy with your hands, you may choose to make your own survival bracelet, because they are extremely popular and can save your life in an emergency situation. However, most people tend to buy them online or from a specialty store. Most people think that making your own may not be safe, but it can be if you do it correctly. To make one, you’ll need about 10 feet of 550 paracord, a lighter, side-release buckle, scissors and a tape measure.
Measurements
You’ll need to take your measurements for your wrist. Use a piece of rope or string that doesn’t stretch and make sure it is snug. Take a marker and make a line on both sides of the rope. Remove the cord from your wrist and straighten it. Measure between the marks. Note that number for later.
Burning The Ends
The paracord ends should be burned so that they melt together. This will ensure that the inside doesn’t come unraveled over time. To do so, cut a small piece off each end and use your lighter to apply fire for about three seconds, rotating around to be even. Use some pliers to squeeze the end so that it is flat. You can also use your fingertips, but it will be very hot.
Attaching Buckles
You’ll want to cut 10 feet of paracord, and burn both ends. Next, you’ll want to fold the cord in half, so both ends are together. Thread the cord into the buckle and tie a secure knot. You can also continue pulling the ends until it pulls snugly. Slide on the other side of the clasp.
Next, you’ll want to measure the cord from the buckle clip to the other buckle clip. Remember your measurement from earlier and add one inch. If you measured 7.5 inches previously, that would mean you would measure the cord from buckle to buckle at 8.5 inches.
Braiding
Once you’ve completed all the measurements, it’s time to braid the cord together for your survival bracelet. The extra ends should be at the top, and you should take the left piece and thread it under the cords. Then take the right piece and thread it under the left. Pull tightly to create a knot. Continue in that fashion until you have made all the knots and are back to the buckle end. Remember to keep the knots tight but not overly tight.
