Are you not sure which of the hundreds of RV stabilizer jacks out there is right for your motorhome? Not exactly sure what that even means? Here are a few tips from RVRoadTrip for some leveling basics:
Leveling Your Motorhome
When you’re on the road, finding the perfect campsite is one of the most important things you’ll have to do. However, perfect sites often come with ground that isn’t even close to level, leaving you in a bind. Refrigerator tanks often work only when they’re level. Additionally, if the unevenness keeps you from getting a good night’s sleep because it forces you into an awkward position when you go to bed then yes, it’s time to get a leveling system to help you out.
Jack Stabilizers
One type of leveling system you can use is a set of RV stabilizer jacks. These are mounted to the front and back of your RV. When you need to level your motorhome, all you need to do is go around and hand-crank the jacks to achieve the height you need. Sometimes drivers can forget they’re using jack stabilizers and pull away the RV while stabilizers are leveling it. If that happens, your stabilizers won’t stand a chance and will quickly fold over or be torn away from your motorhome.
Care and Maintenance
If you’ve got crank-up jacks, you’ll have to regularly clean and grease the jacks to keep them in shape. Since you find these hanging down from your RV, they come in contact with plenty of dirt, debris and grime. If left to accumulate, dirt and grime can compromise the jack and leave you with no way to raise or lower your RV. Also, when you’re using stabilizer jacks, it’s best that you keep an electric drill handy. Go for a cordless model. Use the drill to raise and lower these screw type jacks in a faster and more efficient way than hand cranking them. With a drill, you save a lot on time and effort, so make sure you don’t leave home without one. If you don’t have one it may be worth the trip to the local hardware store.
Other Types of Leveling Systems
Aside from stabilizer jacks, you can also use a stack of planks to level your RV. It’s by far the most cost-effective solution available. If you want something a whole lot more convenient, then a hydraulic leveling system is the one for you. You can’t match the ease of its automated setup. So pick which one suits you and your RV the most. That way, you’re ready for anything when you hit the road, uneven camping sites and all.
