There are several different options in forestry mower designs. These may also be known as forestry mulchers, brushcutters or, less commonly, as masticators. In general, most companies producing this specialized type of equipment will have a design featuring a larger type of drum that turns on a rotating shaft and features different types of specialized teeth.
The two common operating types of forestry mower systems include a direct drive or a belt-driven system. Both are highly effective, durable and built to stand up to the grueling work of shredding small to larger saplings, undergrowth and smaller trees.
Different types of businesses may have a real need for a forestry mower as part of the equipment inventory. They are used in preparation for power lines, to clear land for development, for right-of-way cleaning and even for creating fire breaks and for specific management of potentially invasive species of vegetation.
Cuts the Need for Equipment
Using a forestry mower over traditional land clearing equipment including bulldozers, excavators, tree sheers and felling equipment is a big push. As the rotating drum with the sharp teeth grabs the trees and vegetation and pulls them into the unit, it also shreds, grinds and cuts the branches and stems and trunks, leaving a clean surface.
Instead of long felled saplings and branches that have to be bulldozed and burned or hauled away, the forestry mower literally clears and creates mulch all in one pass, limiting the cost of preparing the area and also decreasing the amount of equipment needed to get the job done.
Size and Project Scope
There are different types of forestry mover designs available. The right type of design and size is going to be dependent on the type of job and the number of acres that typically need to be cleared.
For most companies, having more than one forestry mower is a good option. A smaller sized unit can be used in tight locations or where there is limited mowing required.
Larger equipment that can be difficult to maneuver on a small site is the best option when there are acres to clear or when the types of vegetation you are working with is small and slight. However, when you need to clear a mix of vegetation from woody shrubs and undergrowth to actual trees, a large, more powerful forestry mower that will fit on a larger piece of equipment will be essential.
