Termites cause about $11 billion worth of damage in the United States every year. In order for a professional pest management company to get rid of a termite infestation in your home, you need to work with them. Here is what homeowners need to do to get their homes ready for termite tenting in San Diego.

Remove All Pets or Plants

Nothing living can stay in a home that’s being tented. The tenting process will kill even an adult person. Kennel your pets or make arrangements for them to stay with friends for a day. Tenting is not recommended for people with very large aquariums, unless they are able to remove the entire aquarium from the home before treatment begins. Remove all houseplants. Have the kids stay with relatives or with friends.

Make a Set of Keys

The exterminators will need to go in and out of your home easily. Unless you are going to be standing by during this length procedure, it is highly recommended to make an extra set of keys for the exterminators to use. The exterminators will give these keys back to you after they are done. If you already have an extra set of house keys, then give these to the exterminators. Make sure all of the rooms inside of the home are unlocked.

Turn Off Gas

All gas needs to be turned off in the home before the tenting procedure can begin. The electricity needs to stay on. The exterminators usually do not turn the gas back on. That’s up for the homeowner to remember to do.

Remove All Food

Anything edible, including food, vitamins and medications, needs to be removed from the home before tenting can begin. If any edibles are left behind they must be discarded because they will be harbors of pesticide. However, those food items in cans or sealed glass jars can stay in the home. They will be protected from the pesticide, although it is recommended to rinse the cans or jars off before opening them.

Remove Waterproof Mattresses

Remove any waterproof mattresses, pillow cases or bedding and take them out of the house before treatment begins. Store the items in a vehicle or at a friend’s.
