Unfortunately, there may be times in life when a facial injury is suffered and something needs to be restructured or malformations need to be corrected. In these instances, an appointment with a doctor who specializes in Maxillofacial Surgery Effingham IL will be necessary. To do so, there are certain steps which will need to be followed.

Step 1

The first thing the patient will need to do is to set up the initial appointment. Most such offices are open from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm so make sure to place the call between those times and the office will do all they can to get the appointment scheduled as soon as possible. The patient should let the receptionist know if there is pain being suffered or if it is an emergency situation. Every attempt will be made to expedite the appointment in these cases.

Step 2

The initial appointment will consist of a consultation with the doctor. The doctor will explain the diagnosis to the patient, as well as treatment options. While there are occasions when same-day surgery can be performed, this is rare and most likely a second appointment will need to be made. The patient will need to remember to bring the following things to the consultation:

  *     The referral from the dentist or original doctor

  *     X-rays the previous doctor may have taken

  *     A list of medications the patient is currently taking

  *     Any other medical conditions the patient may currently be suffering from

  *     Any applicable insurance forms or cards

  *     Any patient under the age of 18 needs to be accompanied to the appointment by their parent or legal guardian

Step 3

On the day of the procedure, a driver must accompany the patient undergoing Maxillofacial Surgery Effingham IL so as to be able to drive them home. The driver should not leave the office during the procedure. Eating and drinking is not allowed in the waiting room due to the fact the surgery patients are not allowed to eat or drink for at least several hours previous to undergoing the surgery.

Step 4

The doctor will issue post-surgery instructions regarding proper care and behavior while the patient heals. These instructions must be followed to the letter to be effective. The patient is instructed to call with any questions they may have during the healing process.
