Most people in the construction industry as well as in plumbing, electrical and fabrication trades, have experience in working with U bolts. These bolts that offer a round top to match with common diameters of pipe and tubing make an excellent choice to attach round bar, pipe or tube to any surface.
There are several different variations on the standard U bolt. One is a square head on the U bolt, which is commonly known as a square bend U bolt. The other is a unique shape that is known as a V bolt.
The Basics
Just like the U bolt, the V bolt has two equal legs that are threaded up the length of the leg the desired distance. This can be as little as a third or less of the way to almost up to the shoulder of the bolt.
However, where the U bolt has a rounded top and the square bend has a square top, the V bolt has a peaked or tent shape. The center point of the U forms a peak, which is precisely in the middle. This peak or tent can be more pronounced or less but is definite and easy to identify.
The two legs can also include a clamp or a span. This is a metal bar that goes over the two legs through pre-drilled holes. The nuts are then used to tighten the clamp or span to the surface, providing constant pressure.
Uses and Considerations
The V bolt is often used in trailer manufacturing as well as on radio and antenna towers. This is a very versatile bolt that can be made from a variety of different metals from stainless steel to galvanized steel. As they are often used outdoors, they are designed to be corrosion resistant for long lasting durability.
