Windshields are one of the most common car repair cases. Falling branches, animals, and gravel can damage your windshield. An inquiry of the condition of your windshield could lead to an early discovery, thus a lower cost. Speaking with your insurance company is important, so here are a few things to ask about:

#1 What Will The Insurance Policy Cover?

In the case that your windshield is damaged by something other than a collision, then you will pay for comprehensive coverage. The coverage is optional, but you will be paying for the repairs on your own if you do not have insurance. Comprehensive coverage includes damage occurring from storms, animals, and construction site debris. Make sure you read the policy carefully and ensure that it includes windshield repair and windshield replacement. Even though it may read, “auto glass repair,” this is not all-inclusive all the time. It may only mean the side or back windows.

#2 How much Will the Deductible Be?

Compare the cost of windshield repair or replacement with the size of the comprehensive deductible before filing a windshield repair claim. Some companies and policies will cover the cost for glass replacement that does not include a deductible, but you will still have to pay for the full price. Usually when the result of windshield damage is not caused by a collision, the insurance rates do not increase, but this varies with insurance companies. Do not file a claim if the cost of the windshield repair or replacement is only a small amount greater than the deductible.

If your windshield takes impact from a tree branch and:
*      Windshield Repair = $290
*      Deductible = $240
*      Insurance Contribution = $50

Consider if saving $50 is worth filing the claim. The more claims you accumulate on your record, the more at risk you are perceived to be to your insurance company, thus increasing the insurance rates after a certain amount of claims that exceeds a conditioned driver.

#3 Who Should I Trust For Repairs?

On the other hand, if the deductible is low enough, file your claim with your insurance company immediately. A representative will confirm if you are covered or not for the windshield repair or replacement. Sometimes you are required to get the damaged inspected for reimbursement. Once the claim is received, the insurance company usually offers to have you take your vehicle to a company they are affiliated with for the repairs, or let you choose a repair shop. However, if you select a repair shop yourself, the reimbursement amount may vary. Be sure to select a reputable company, such as one that is AGRSS® certified.
