There are challenges to being a startup manufacturer or a small to mid-sized OEM that are not factors of concern for large, established manufacturers. A key consideration is the ability to find industrial parts and component distributors with a specialization in working with your size of business.
Unfortunately, many small to medium production OEMs find out that their fastener suppliers are terrific for a few orders, but as the supplier moves into larger markets, they are less interested in working with small OEMs. This leads to problems in orders, irregular shipping, missed Just-In-Time deliveries and even cost increases that reduce the ability of the OEM to compete.
Finding the best fastener suppliers for OEMs that have lower volume requirements can be a challenge. However, by taking the time to understand the model the supplier is using, it is possible to find the ideal supplier to work with.
Vendor Managed Inventory Programs
As a time and cost-saving consideration, small to mid-sized OEMs should consider VMI or Vendor Managed Inventory programs. These can be designed as dock-to-dock or dock-to-stock based on your requirements.
Working with the supplier, your team can designed inventory minimum and maximums, and with scanners to monitor inventory levels, orders are placed to optimize levels and to help reduce costs.
Selection of Fasteners and Industrial Supplies
When comparing any fastener suppliers, it is important to take a close look at the selection and the types of fasteners and industrial supplies the vendor offers. Some suppliers have a relatively narrow inventory selection and tend to be designed for materials for one industry.
Other suppliers offer a comprehensive listing of materials, fasteners, industrial supplies, and other related items. Suppliers with a broader inventory allow your company to work with one vendor, reducing paperwork, ordering, and coordination of the inventory.
