Terrazzo floors are stunning, combining the beauty of marble with the power of human ingenuity. Modern terrazzo floors are even more durable and long-lived than their predecessors, offering lower maintenance, a longer lifespan, and enhanced beauty. With that being said, you’ll still need to worry about regular cleaning and maintenance. The following tips will help improve your terrazzo cleaning process.
Sweep
First, you’ll need to sweep the floor with a dry mop or with a broom. Make sure to get all the dust and debris up, and always use a soft bristled brush or mop. This should be done on an as-needed basis, and should be part of daily or weekly maintenance.
Wash
Do not use any detergent cleanser in your terrazzo cleaning process. Plain water is all that is necessary for regular cleaning. If your floor is more heavily soiled, you can use a cleaner with a neutral pH (one that is specially formulated for terrazzo or natural stone floors will work fine). Damp mop the floor, and allow the cleanser to sit on the floor for a few minutes.
Rinse
If you found that sweeping was not all that was necessary and that mopping was required, the next step in the terrazzo floor cleaning process is to rinse the floor with clean water and then remove all the water. The best bet is to use a squeegee to remove the water, but you can also use a wet/dry vac if needed.
Buff
Note that you do not need to buff your floor if you only swept it. However, if you had to mop it, you will need to buff it to bring back the floor’s luster. Use a dry buffing pad with the machine set to low.
Stains
Terrazzo flooring should resist liquids, but there is a chance that it will stain if the liquid is allowed to sit for too long. You can clean those stains with all-natural vinegar in most instances. You should not use cleansers with abrasives added, as these will scratch and damage the floor. Adding vinegar to your mop water will help add a bit of shine to the floor.
