If you have your PEI Drivers License but are over the age of 70 there are a number of things you can do to make sure you remain a safe driver. Here are some things aging drivers should keep in mind in order to continue to keep their driving records clean:
Medications
If you have been prescribed new medications be certain you are aware of any side effects that will make it dangerous for you to drive. Speak to your doctor or pharmacist and discuss what can happen if you have even one alcoholic beverage with your new medications. Failure to understand what effects your medications will have on your driving can result in being charged with impaired driving. This can lead to serious issues including a criminal record, a steep fine or even jail time. It can also results in the loss of Your drivers license in PEI which will have a huge impact on your freedom to get around. If you are in an accident your insurance company can also refuse to pay for you and your passengers’ injuries as well as any other damages.
Eye Sight
As you know you might experience changes to your vision as you age. Driving without your glasses this can lead to serious issues and even cause an accident. If it is a stipulation of your license to drive with your glasses it could be even worse. As well if you have an eye appointment with your doctor find out if they will be applying any eye drops that will dilate your pupils. If so it is a good idea to take a cab or have someone drive you. If you are undergoing day surgery as an out patient it is also important to arrange to have someone pick you up.
Driving Safely
In order to continue to be a safe driver you should:
* Stick to areas you are familiar with or have someone come with you to navigate.
* Do not drive in rush hour when possible.
* Do not drive if it is considered dangerous with medications you are taking.
* Do not drive if you are having vision issues.
* Do not drive if you are ill, dizzy or experiencing headaches
* Stay fit so you are able to react appropriately when driving.
* Plan your route so you are making right hand turns as left hand turns are more dangerous for aging drivers.
* Avoid night driving.
Being aware of how aging can affect your driving will help keep you and other drivers on the road safe.
