Capacitor Discharge welding is cutting-edge technology in the field of welding. This method of welding joins pieces of metal with the help of a hard, solid bond using power from a bank of capacitors. It requires specially designed stud with a projection tip called projection weld studs.

Projection weld studs have a small extension on the surface that is used to weld to the base metal. This type requires a press-type machine. Projection weld studs typically produce a stronger and more precise weld than spot weld fasteners.

It is important to know in advance when and when not to use projection weld studs on any application.

If any of the parts are dirty with oil or dirt or any type of debris, it can significantly reduce the life of the projection tip. Some machines have a pre-weld option that burns this off before welding.

Choosing the type of weld often is determined by the available equipment. If a shop has a choice, then projection welding with projection weld studs usually will produce better results.
