Improvisational Entertainment
Improv has been a form of entertainment for as long as people have been entertained but improv comedy is an entirely different set of affairs. The modern history of improvisational comedy is largely credited to Viola Spolin who created the “Theater Games” method of teaching. The entire idea of improv entertainment and ultimately the comedic branch is to live in the moment on stage and to show up completely unprepared. Viola’s son opened one of the first comedy clubs that focused on this type or presentation in 1959 and began offering workshops shortly thereafter to budding comedians.
