Going to federal prison is scary, but you can prepare yourself to face the challenges that come with incarceration when you know what to expect. One of the best ways to know what to expect is by reading a federal inmate handbook, but even then, you may not know how things will change for you when you go to a federal prison in Arizona.

The rules

The rules in prison are different from what you experience out of prison. The best way to cope is by following the rules and ensuring you a model inmate. This will make your stay easier and will help you avoid trouble.

Adjustment period

You will need to make significant adjustments. For instance, you will be interacting with many strangers and people from all walks of life. This includes murderers, gang members, petty thieves, etc. You won’t have as much personal space as you are used to, and you probably won’t have the coveted alone time you crave at the end of the day. Adjustment periods vary from person to person, but the sooner you accept your new reality, the easier it is for you.

Strip searches

New inmates are stripped and searched, which is scary and embarrassing for a lot of people. However, the searches ensure contrabands aren’t introduced in the facility. They also show inmates that the guards are in control. Luckily, strip searches don’t happen too often after the initial search, except after you’ve had a visitor. They also happen more often if you are believed to be a troublemaker or involved in some illegal activity. It’s better to lay low in prison and not get involved in such cases.

Much more will change when you go to prison, but these tips have given you an idea of what to expect.
